Quit Stalling

The safety hazard posed by a stalling engine usually requires the expertise of an auto technician for diagnosis. While mechanical systems can cause an engine to stall, the majority of stalling problems involve any of a number of electrical components, from the ignition switch to the fuel pump. If an inspection of the fuses doesn’t reveal a problem, it is best to turn to an auto technician, who can run a trouble code scan to identify a problem. If no trouble code is triggered, the technician may proceed to a check of fuel pressure. Other areas that deserve examination are the ignition system, the battery connection, the exhaust system, any of a number of sensors, and the main computer system.

Because a stalling engine can have so many different causes, it’s imperative that a skilled technician diagnose and fix the problem. HINT: If an electrical connection shorts inside the vehicle’s main computer system, known as the powertrain control module or PCM, it can cause the engine to stall.
