Bringing Things to a Halt

Recent attention to unintended acceleration problems may have some drivers asking themselves what they would do if they were faced with a vehicle that suddenly raced ahead without the application of the accelerator pedal. The answer is: Brake firmly, without pumping the brakes. Next, shift the transmission into “Neutral,” and steer the vehicle to a safe location and come to a full stop. Then shut off the engine with the transmission still in “Neutral.” Finally, shift the transmission into “Park.” As with all highway emergencies, it is best to anticipate what you would do in the event that an emergency were to occur. This includes everything from a tire blowout to an overheated engine. Preparation is the key to safety.

Of course, no matter how prepared you are for a sudden automotive dis- aster on the highway, the best thing is to prevent the disaster before it hap- pens. And the best way to do that is to have a well-maintained car that receives regularly scheduled check- ups from a qualified technician.
